New Orleans Pelicans NBA Draft: Jake Toolson brings elite shooting

Jake Toolson’s Weaknesses

Toolson is a fairly one-dimensional player offensively. He is a spot-up shooter who is not going to make a lot of plays for others and doesn’t have the quickness to beat NBA defenders off the dribble.

He has decent size at 6-foot-5 but there are concerns about whether he has the quickness or strength to stay in front of NBA guards on the defensive end.

Like Duncan Robinson or J.J. Redick, Toolson would have to overcome his lack of athleticism by being a smart team defender who positions himself well to get deflections.

Toolson is already 24-years-old, which would make him one of the older Pelicans even though he has never played a game in the NBA.

He has been through some problems with anxiety, which is what caused him to leave BYU the first time before eventually returning for his senior year.

He does have a decent wingspan and active hands, so Toolson may end up being good enough defensively, especially against the other team’s second unit.

Toolson is not a dynamic player but he does have an NBA skill that could help the New Orleans Pelicans.
