New Orleans Pelicans: A trade with the Miami Heat that benefits both teams

This trade would be less than ideal for the New Orleans Pelicans from a player standpoint, but they would be picking up two additional draft picks for taking on Iguodala’s contract.

Iggy played well in limited minutes this season and provided veteran leadership, and at times, elite defense. But he is making $17 million for two more seasons, so doesn’t have a lot of trade value unless the Heat attach an asset.

That asset is the 20th pick in this draft plus another future first-rounder. The Pels also get Olynyk, who would be a useful rotation player, as well as some additional cap space.

This would be a risky one for the Pelicans, as they’d be giving established talent for an over-the-hill Iguodala, a mediocre Olynyk and two picks. However, they would be getting some cap space, and would now have more draft assets than just about any other team to make additional trades.

The Miami Heat will be one of the teams pursuing Jrue Holiday and there may be some mutual interest. The Heat would have a chance to get back to the Finals while the Pelicans could balance their roster, clear up some cap space and add additional assets for the future.
