When the New Orleans Pelicans hired Stan Van Gundy, they knew they were getting a well-respected coach who could potentially bring some people with him.

Not only will Stan Van Gundy help to recruit veteran free agents to the Pelicans, but should build a staff of dynamic assistant coaches.

Van Gundy has always had a strong staff of mostly former players who were good at teaching their respective positions.

With almost all of the NBA head coaching vacancies filled, Stan Van Gundy should have his pick of some of the top assistants, depending on how things shake out.

He could bring back some coaches he has worked with in the past, but SVG should also look to broaden his reach and hire some guys who might be good for specific players.

He could also be hiring his replacement. Van Gundy signed a four-year contract, but we all know how that usually works out. If Van Gundy doesn’t last through the whole contract for one reason or another, one of his assistants could take over.

Since Van Gundy is no spring chicken, he should be preparing the next person to take over, even if he does last through the entire four years of his deal.
