The New Orleans Pelicans should explore signing Glenn Robinson III to sure up their wing rotation

The first wave of  NBA free agency has officially come and gone with most of the biggest names off the board at this point. That leaves a lot of New Orleans Pelicans fans feeling disappointed because outside of a blockbuster trade for Steven Adams, and depth signing in Willy Hernangomez, the organization has done nothing.

From what I gather, most of the disappointment is coming from the Pelicans’ lack of improvements to their wing positions. Most fans thought that the organization would select a wing with the 13th pick in last week’s draft, but instead, they made the puzzling move of selecting guard Kira Lewis Jr.

That’s why I’m here now to give fans a little faith because it turns out there are still several wing players available on the market who could provide this year’s roster with reliable contributions. Including Glenn Robinson III, who I have my eyes on right now.

Why Glenn Robinson III is the perfect fit for the New Orleans Pelicans rotation in 2021

The New Orleans Pelicans flat-out struggled to play reliable defense on the wings last season and that caused their play on the perimeter to take a hit. That’s why I believe that Glenn Robinson III is worth signing, even if he might cost all of the money that the Pelicans have remaining.

Just look at Robinson and you’ll understand why I feel that way. He stands at 6’6″ with a 6’10” wingspan, and every time he takes the court he uses that size to give maximum effort on the defensive end of the floor.

Now I know that effort doesn’t equate to production, and Robinson will never be confused with an All-Defensive player, but look at what Robinson did with the Golden State Warriors for half of last season.

When Robinson played under Steve Kerr in a defensive scheme that’s similar to the one Stan Van Gundy runs, he performed well. In fact, he was one of the lone bright spots on a Warriors defense that ranked 26th in the league.

Then there’s Robinson’s production on the other side of the floor. As an offensive wing, Robinson is a reliable 3 point shooter, with a 37 percent stroke from deep. Again, I go back to the flashes Robinson showed last year in Golden State, and I look at how quickly Robinson ran off screens for catch-and-shoot looks.

Truthfully, I think there’s still some upside left in Glenn Robinson III that has yet to be unlocked. If the Pelicans sign him to a 2-year deal and let him work with a coaching staff that’s known for strong player development then fans might be able to rejoice in having another reliable contributor on the wing.
