The New Orleans Pelicans are reportedly interested in trading for the Golden State Warrior’s Kelly Oubre Jr.

It’s been a tough go for the New Orleans Pelicans who have opened the season with a 5-10 record, and now some of the harsh realities from within the Smoothie King Center are finally reaching the outside.

In a bombshell piece from the Athletic’s Shams Charnia (subscription required), the NBA insider stated that the Pelicans are open to trading both Lonzo Ball and veteran J.J. Redick after the team’s poor start to the season. The report stated the dealing the pair of guards would make room for Kira Lewis Jr. and Nickeil Alexander-Walker to get more playing time.

This information went along with the theories we’ve already been developing here at Pelican Debrief, but Charnia’s reporting went even further. According to Charnia, the Pelicans are also discussing a potential trade with the Golden State Warriors for Kelly Oubre Jr.

Making sense of the New Orleans Pelicans’ Kelly Oubre Jr. rumors

When I read that piece from Charnia, I instantly became excited because Kelly Oubre Jr. could be a player that the Pelicans need to turn their season around.

At 25-years old, Oubre is a 6’7″ wing who’s playing out of position in Golden State, trying to fill the void left by Klay Thompson. It’s become clear that he’s not suited to do that as his numbers are slipping.

However, Oubre has shown that he can be effective when playing the right role, something we saw when he was with the Phoenix Suns last year. Luckily for the Warriors, the Pelicans may also have players better served for the Warriors style. So, what might the deal look like? Let’s check it out.
