New Orleans Pelicans: Should the Pels trade for a star?

Buy!

I’ve written that the biggest argument for getting a guy like Bradley Beal is that you have Zion Williamson.

Zion has already had health issues and may only be in his athletic prime for a short time, so there is some amount of urgency to try and win sooner rather than later.

The other reason to do it is that the roster as currently constructed is not championship caliber and probably needs another star to go with Zion and BI.

Lonzo Ball has looked like that guy at times but there is no way the Pels can give him the max deal he wants at this point.

Kira Lewis Jr. is a teenager who has shown some flashes but he’s hardly done enough to be part of a “Big 3” for the Pels.

If the Pelicans don’t think Lonzo is the guy and that they will eventually need a third star, then why not go out and trade for one?

If the Pelicans can get a third star then the rest of the pieces will fall into place. Who knows, they might even be able to turn this season around and make a run at the playoffs.

The Pels have more draft picks than they could ever use, so why not put some of them together with one of the young players and go get a star who fits better with the cornerstones?

Such a player may not be available, but if someone like Beal is, the Pels have every reason to go after him.

Of course, there is the other side of the argument.
