The New Orleans Pelicans are currently the most dysfunctional franchise in the NBA and it’s mostly because of Zion Williamson and David Griffin.

I don’t blame Zion or Griffin for the injury, as those happen, but their handling of it has been terrible from day one, starting with keeping the whole thing a secret and then lying about it on media day.

We still have no idea when or where Zion’s injury occurred, when the New Orleans Pelicans knew about it or when Zion might return.

Some fans have championed the front office for not having any “leaks,” which I suppose is true but when you leave a Zion sized silence about his injury and the state of the team, it is going to be filled by someone and so far the void has been crammed full of toxicity.

Pelicans: It’s time for Zion Williamson to speak

On one hand, I understand that the team was trying to protect their star from scrutiny by being silent about his injury, but my response would be “how’d that turn out?”

Instead of getting regular updates or ever hearing from the man himself, the Pels have given us a wall of silence.

But that hasn’t stopped everyone else from talking, whether it is fans calling Zion lazy and fat or Charles Barkley essentially doing the same on national TV.

By being silent, the Pelicans have brought ten times more scrutiny onto Zion Williamson and have left fans and media to create their own narratives, which have been entirely negative.

The Pelicans’ ship is sinking fast and we’ve heard nothing from their star player about his condition or state of mind, nor their VP of Basketball Operations about the state of his roster.

Instead, we’ve gotten story after story about Zion being fat, and now a new one about David Griffin getting into a fight with a former coach. Another round of toxicity for the house!

The Pelicans would probably just say they don’t care, and that they keep their problems in house, great. But by doing so they have made things way worse, and after a 1-11 start this silence is going to start turning into booing and then complete apathy.

You can’t expect fans to buy your story or come along for ride if you won’t speak to them.
