New Orleans Pelicans: A trade with the Cleveland Cavaliers

Trade with the Cleveland Cavaliers

The Cavaliers have some talent with Kevin Love, Andre Drummond and Collin Sexton but their roster still needs talent and youth as they try to rebuild.

The most likely to be traded is Kevin Love, who was unhappy with his teammates for most of the season and would garner the most in a trade. But Love is on the backside of his career, making a lot of money and still has three years left on his deal after this one.

His value is not as high as it once was and there may be some opportunity there for the Pelicans.

In this trade the Pelicans take on an extra year of Love’s contract in exchange for the 5th pick in the draft.

Love would be a risk but on paper fits well with Zion Williamson as a stretch-five who can create space and spread the floor. He is not the defender or rebounder he once was, but would give the Pelicans a dynamic offense that would be tough to stop.

The Pels could then use the 5th pick on someone like Onyeka Okongwu, who would help make up for Love’s defensive deficiencies.

The Cavs get an All-Star to replace Love, a project in NAW and still keep a pick in the lottery. It would allow them to jettison the unhappy Love and build a solid backcourt with Holiday and Sexton.

They also free up future cap space and would have a ton off the books in the free agency class of 2021.
