The New Orleans Pelicans are ranked 27th in defense after giving up 143 points to the Dallas Mavericks.

While the Pels’ starting five has been one of the best in the NBA, their bench has been terrible. They don’t have a reliable scorer and Josh Hart has really been the only consistent contributor.

The Pels also have too many guards and not enough size, as they have no backups for either Brandon Ingram or Zion Williamson.

They could desperately use an injection of size, hustle and defensive energy off the bench.

The Pels’ biggest issue is clearly bench depth, as they are constantly giving up big leads and often have guys playing out of position.

This is why they should try to make a move for a guy like Dwight Powell.

New Orleans Pelicans: Trading for Dwight Powell

Powell is not a guy who is going to make the New Orleans Pelicans into contenders but he is a solid veteran who would add depth to their bench and make it much easier to move on from Jaxson Hayes.

The Pels don’t need a splashy trade, as their starters can hang with just about anyone but if they can solidify their bench, the playoffs are still in reach.

In this trade, the Pels bolster their depth behind both Steven Adams and Zion Williamson, while the Mavericks get an expiring contract in Redick who might need a change of scenery to get going.

Dallas would love to add some shooting and the Pels would love to add an adult defender off the bench.
